Overall subject intent
1. We live in a world where technology develops at breathtaking speed. As an IT department we are focused on preparing the students of JCSC to be able to use technology in a safe and exciting way. When our students enter the workplace they will be using technology that does not even exist yet, it is our duty to prepare pupils for this brave new world.
2. Are there annual events that take place within the subject or do you do something different that makes your subject stand out?
As a subject we provide students with the opportunity to work with businesses in our local area that specialise using IT and Computing to build a range of high prevision products. In addition to this, we are offering students the opportunity to enter a Lego Computing competition where students build and code Lego robots to complete a range of challenges.
3. Special in-school facilities (labs, library with librarian, instruments, design/tech equipment etc)
We have three IT rooms that are specifically used for IT and Computing lessons, in addition to this we have a large fleet of laptops for students to access IT in their lessons across all subjects.
4. Any careers and stakeholder involvement in curriculum planning and delivery e.g. visits from authors, to universities, from industry, community projects (identify the year group if applicable)
The content of our curriculum meets the needs of the local demands in employment by students studying a range of coding and IT related topics which not only upskill students but also provide students with skills that can be applied to other subjects and future learning activities.
5. Extracurricular activities linked to the subject offered both at lunchtime and after school, this could also include regular residential trips/field work.
Coding Club is open to all students to enhance and build upon their coding skills which supports their ability to complete a range of challenging tasks.
6. Highlight any apps/ or resources that students will use
Google Drive and Google Classroom apps are very useful for them to be downloaded onto students personal devices. This not only allows them to access content posted by their teacher, but also students will receive updates from teachers with homework postings and other announcements related to the subject.
