History
History is fundamental to empowering pupils to engage in all manner of conversations and debates. We want to ensure that our students always have something to say and can speak from a position of knowledge rather than one of ignorance. History is uniquely positioned to do this through the breadth and depth of knowledge it offers for students to master.
History is not just about the past; it is about how the present is shaped. It reveals the diversity of human experience and cultures in an ever-integrating world and it is essential that any individual can recognise the legacy and contribution of British and non-British societies to the on-going development of human civilisation. At JCSC, we enjoy ample opportunity to impart our love of history and encourage lessons dominated by lively debate where informed opinion can drive learning and personal development. Students are expected to confidently communicate their knowledge and understanding through considered analysis and the use of logical and rational debate.
Examples of on-going assessment and feedback in lessons
• Verbal feedback by the teacher to the whole class which students act on in the lesson; this is often evidenced using green pen.
• Pupils self-assess or peer-assess work with a clear framework guiding them through this.
• Teachers circulate to give ’LIVE’ and immediate feedback as pupils are working independently
• Pupils may complete mini quizzes or retrieval activities that revisit prior learning and receive verbal feedback
• Use of tailored questioning by the teacher
