A smelly experiment for our Sixth Formers!

Year 12 Chemistry students, have had fun experimenting with the very smelly fermentation process in an attempt to make alcohol.

Pictured below are students: Harry, Alex, Thea, Grace, Lana and William, who each chose a different carbohydrate for their fermentation experiment. Student, Grace explains:

“We made alcohol through fermentation by using yeast. We all had to bring in a carbohydrate to use so we had cornflakes, weetabix, blueberries, bread and a potato. We also tried to make alcohol by using sugar too.

We left them too sit for the majority of the week where they began to smell or leak. Such as the weetabix one that had to be cleaned before we had chance to see it due to it smelling so bad. The aim was to be able to smell alcohol proving that we had made some however the majority of them, especially the cornflakes one just smelled horrible.

The trials including sugar and blueberry worked best and definitely had a subtle alcohol smell.”
