Assistant Headteacher
Full Time/Permanent
Pay Scale – Leadership Scale 10-14
Be Kind. Work Hard. Aim High
James Calvert Spence College is an evolving school, currently a 9-18 school as a result of a merger between middle and high schools, but transitioning into an 11-18 secondary school by next September.
Additionally, the planning work for our new build school is almost at an end, with building work anticipated to start later this year and the doors opening in summer 2026.
Following a leadership restructure, we are looking to appoint an inspirational Assistant Headteacher to further improve outcomes at GCSE and A-level. Our last Ofsted (June 2022) rated us as a good school in all aspects – something we are incredibly proud of, and which came about as the result of hard work and honest, supportive communication between every member of the school team.
We’re looking for the right person who can further develop our systems to ensure that expectations of staff, parents and students are uniformly high, so that measurable outcomes continue to improve. Ultimately, our school needs someone who understands data, can hold people to account and who cares passionately about our community.
We’re looking for someone who is an excellent teacher, who has a depth of knowledge and experience around embedding strategies to improve outcomes, and who understands how to bring a community along with them on a journey of transformation, so its expectations are heightened and it is inspired to strive for even more.
We’re looking for a colleague who can work as part of a team and who wants to make a real difference to the lives of our students and staff – they deserve the best.
You will be a key part of the school’s senior leadership team and, as such, will be involved in strategic planning and decision making across all phases. It’s an exciting, vibrant and unique place to work. It’s never dull – no two days are the same – but you will smile every day, and you will make a difference.
We hope that, after reading the information you feel compelled to apply for the post. To do so, please complete the application form and return it with a letter of application that demonstrates your suitability for this role and how you feel you could benefit JCSC as it moves into its next, exciting phase.
Please contact Louisa Hedley, Executive Assistant on lhedley01@jcsc.co.uk or 01665 710636. Please indicate clearly the title ‘Assistant Headteacher’ in the subject field of your email.
Closing date for applications: noon Sunday 12th May with interviews scheduled Friday 17th May.

Head of Behaviour and Pastoral
Permanent, 37 hours per week, term time plus 10 days
Band 9: £33,037 – £36,649
Be Kind. Work Hard. Aim High
Do you believe every child deserves the very best education? Are you an effective team player with a positive disposition and a well-developed sense of humour? If so, we have the position for you!
We are seeking a leader who will help us drive forward our vision for behaviour and safeguarding. The Head of Behaviour and Pastoral is a new role: a non-teacher who will form part of the small Executive Leadership Team at James Calvert Spence College. The post has been developed to build capacity to our leadership team, and we are seeking a new leader to lead our behavioural culture to the next level and ensure students are at the heart of every decision and get the best educational experience they can.
By applying for this role you could join our exciting journey towards developing positive behaviour across our year 6-13 school. Over the last year we have changed our approach to managing behaviour by adopting a relational approach. We have had access to a wealth of support from the BeYou, mental health team, Educational Mental Health Practitioners and other members of the local authority as one of their pilot schools. Our journey will be showcased in the Northumberland summer conferences.
We have invested heavily in developing positive behaviours throughout the school. You will manage a skilled team of Pastoral Support Officers who will also support you in your safeguarding role as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads. As attendance is high priority, we have appointed a Family Liaison officer. Most recently we have appointed a PSO to manage our internal inclusion unit this, alongside our reflection room, provides opportunity to reflect on behaviour choices and reduce the number of suspensions across the school.
You will be a determined and resilient individual who believes that a culture of excellent behaviour for learning and respect is vital to the progress of our students and key to supporting them unlocking their full potential.
To fulfil the role, you will be required to deal with students, parents and outside agencies in a professional, prompt and confidential manner. Strong interpersonal skills are essential!
The role is predominantly based in school but also has a wider remit, including working with families and the wider community to promote engagement and intervention at the earliest opportunity. Seeking links with alternative education providers and ensuring high quality provision is also part of the day job.
The successful candidate will work with students aged 9 – 18, whose behaviour and disaffection has significant impact upon their attainment. In line with our school values ‘Be Kind, Work Hard, Aim High’, you will help to improve pupil progress and achievement by minimising barriers to learning and maximising pupil participation.
This is an exciting time to join a dedicated staff team in our Ofsted rated GOOD school.
You will play an integral part in working towards our whole school priorities:
– to raise attainment of all students, including disadvantaged students, in all year groups
– to promote and enhance the physical and mental health and wellbeing of all members of our community
In return, the role offers a friendly and supportive working environment with excellent opportunities for training and development.
If you are interested in a career in student welfare, behaviour and/or wellbeing, then we’d like to hear from you.
Further details about the school and vacancy can be obtained from www.jcsc.co.uk or by emailing lgordon01@jcsc.co.uk, Linda Gordon, Business Support Officer.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. It is essential that all staff and volunteers share this commitment. You can view our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy online. An enhanced criminal records check from the Disclosure and Barring Service is required for all posts.

Learning Support Partner
Permanent
32.5 hours per week (term time plus 5 days), permanent
Band 3: £17,810 – £18,108
Be Kind. Work Hard. Aim High
As a result of specific learning needs identified within pupil cohorts, we require additional Learning
Support Partners (LSPs) to join our friendly and supportive Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
(SEND) team to start as soon as possible.
Main duties include working in classrooms to support individual, or small groups of pupils in reaching
their specific social, emotional or academic targets.
Often referred to as Teaching Assistant or Learning Support Assistant, at JCSC we recognise the vital
and valued work undertaken, and have named the role ‘Learning Support Partner’, which we believe
more accurately reflects the direct impact your work will have on our pupils, their learning and their
futures.
The successful candidate will be able to work independently with individuals, small groups or within a
whole class as required; have the ability to use initiative and apply effective problem-solving skills; be
able to work as a member of a team; and sensitively understand the needs of pupils and their
families.
Typical work includes:
· 1 to 1 or small group support for pupils in class
· Delivery of intervention programmes to individual pupils or small groups
· Supporting with setting and reviewing targets and updating pupil passports
In return, this rewarding position offers good prospects for in-school development and progression –
former LSPs have moved on to Pastoral Support Officer and Assistant SENCO roles within JCSC – and
also offers practical experience for anyone considering a career in teaching. Our LSPs benefit from
participation in weekly staff CPD alongside teaching staff and benefit from the guidance of the
county’s lead SENCO, who also happens to be Head of School and SENCO here at JCSC. Training is
provided on a range of SEND and whole school related topics such as safeguarding and literacy, as
well as specific SEND needs.
Experience working within education is welcome but not essential – it is more important that you are
an empathetic individual who is passionate about education and helping pupils to overcome barriers
to learning. If you can support, motivate and inspire our pupils to get the most out of their time at
JCSC, we want to hear from you!
Our Learning Support Partners typically work 32.5 hours equally spread evenly over 5 days with some
after school time on Mondays to accommodate continual professional development time. However,
we will also consider applications from candidates who wish to job share or work reduced hours.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. It is
essential that all staff and volunteers share this commitment. You can view our policy for
Safeguarding and Child protection here. An enhanced criminal records check from the Disclosure
and Barring Service is required for all posts.
