Staff, pupils and parents, embraced our challenge of ‘dress up as a word’ today in celebration of World Book Day!
We had some interesting and unusual entries, including: Illuminate, Spring, Green, Injured, Equestrian, Gothic, Christmas, Burrito, Odd, Hidden, Sleepy, Cosy, Hawaiian, Fancy and Interpretation. The winners were awarded with a paper back book of their choice.
Throughout the week our English department and Library, ran a series of language and literacy exercises during tutor time, English lessons and library sessions. Activities included; Which music would you match with this book?; Can you work out the book titles from the emoji’s? and ‘Book Speed Dating’ where pupils were given the opportunity to read the synopsis of a book, rate it for first impressions and decide if they would like to read on for a ‘second date.’
Director of English, Ms Sutherland said: “We are delighted that so many pupils embraced our World Book Day themed week. World Book Day is a perfect opportunity to remind our school community of the importance of reading. The activities we planned were intended to spark a focus on reading for pleasure, support children’s autonomy in book choice, and embed a habit of reading to bring a wide range of benefits. Our library offers an excellent range of books that are available to all and we encourage pupils to borrow them. Thank you to all students who made an effort for our dress up as a word day. It was encouraging to see pupils creativity, thoughtfulness and positive attitudes.”
