At James Calvert Spence College the voices of our students are valued and a fundamental part of our Personal Development Programme.

Who are our student councillors?

We have a thriving Student Council who represent all year groups of our student body. Our student council is made up of two students from every form class within each year group. These representatives have been elected by the students.

What is the role of a student councillor?

The student councillors collect feedback from the peers within their tutor group and then meet with staff every fortnight to ensure all students’ voices are heard and actioned. The representatives then meet with the Executive Leadership Team on a termly basis.

How is the student council organised?

We have four focus areas which are: Rewards Fund, Awareness Raising, Mental Health, Teaching and Learning.
These focus groups consist of students from all year groups to ensure every voice is represented.

What does it mean to be a student councillor?

“I am excited about being part of the student council so that the views of my year group are heard.” (Year 8 student)

“Being a student rep means to make important positive changes in your school.” (Year 6 student)

“To be a student rep you need to listen to others.” (Year 7 student)

“I am here to make the school the best I can for our students and staff.” (Year 9 student)

“I really want to make some positive changes before I leave JCSC at the end of year 11, something good to leave behind.” (Year 11 student)

What does our Head of Sixth Form say about student voice in year 12 and 13?

“In Sixth Form we have three houses; Magpies, Eagles and Falcons, with leaders for each house: Lyla, Libby, and Scott. They help organise events and charity fundraising whilst also gathering house teams for the weekly house competition every Friday. House leaders act as form reps and gather feedback from the Sixth Form sharing student voice with me half termly. They input on frameworks and ideas in the Sixth Form whilst also leading on year group events such as the leavers dinner.”: Mr J. Moore.
