JCSC Pupils Celebrated at the Alnwick & District Sports Awards

Last night, Tuesday 24th February 2026, four of our Year 7 pupils, Matilda Griffin, Jack Forsyth, Phoebe Fraser and Samantha Brown, were invited to the Alnwick and District Sports Awards, held at the Alnwick Playhouse. It was a fantastic evening recognising sporting excellence from across our region.

These pupils were nominated for their remarkable achievements throughout 2025, and we are incredibly proud that their dedication, talent, and character were celebrated on such a respected stage.

Matilda Griffin – Trampolining

Matilda has enjoyed an outstanding year in trampolining, representing both James Calvert Spence College and Wansbeck Gymnastics and Trampolining Club, which she has been part of since 2018.

Her highlights from 2025 include:

  • 1st Place at the Regional Challenge Cup Final in Billingham, qualifying her for the Intra‑Regional Challenge Cup National Final at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena—her first national‑level competition.
  • 1st Place at the Northern Closed Championships in Consett.
  • Qualifying for the Zonal Schools Trampolining Final after success at the Regional Schools Qualifier in Whickham.

Beyond her technical talent, Matilda is recognised for her kindness, leadership, and sportsmanship—supporting teammates, reassuring younger gymnasts, and celebrating the achievements of others with genuine enthusiasm.

Matilda’s Mum, Rebecca Griffin, shared a heartfelt message following the ceremony:

“We’re very grateful for the support you all give to Matilda (and the other children) recognising achievements outside school – pursuing the nomination, attending tonight and generally being cheerleaders. It is very much appreciated. I’m very aware not all schools are as supportive and it makes a big difference.”
Rebecca Griffin

Jack Forsyth – Football, Running & Athletics

Jack’s nomination reflects his incredible versatility as an athlete. Representing JCSC Football Academy, FC Amble Vikings U13, and FC Amble Inter U12, he has demonstrated consistency, commitment, and a positive attitude throughout the year.

Key achievements include:

  • Playing a year up for Amble Vikings U13, earning multiple Man of the Match awards, a high goal tally, and helping his team reach the cup final.
  • Earning Manager’s Player of the Season and Parents’ Player of the Season across his teams.
  • Finishing 1st in his year group at the 2025 Berwick cross‑country event.
  • Placing in the top 16 at the Cross Country Championships at Temple Park in January 2026, qualifying for the Inter‑County Championships.
  • Helping the Year 7 Boys Indoor Athletics Team achieve Gold, securing qualification for the next stage of the competition in Blyth.

Jack is admired for his humility, reliability, and willingness to step into any position with confidence and determination.

Phoebe Fraser – Football

Another of our talented Year 7 nominees, Phoebe Fraser, was also recognised for an impressive year in football. As a committed midfielder for Alnwick Town U12s, Phoebe plays a crucial role in linking defence and attack, showing great tactical understanding, determination, and teamwork. Her selection for the JCSC Football Academy highlights both her technical ability and her potential for long-term development. This year, Phoebe was also invited to the Northumberland County trials, a significant achievement that reflects the growing recognition she is earning beyond her club. She was honoured with both the Outstanding Team Player Award and the Most Improved Player Award, demonstrating not only her progress but the high regard in which she is held by her coaches and teammates.
Phoebe’s nomination acknowledges her maturity, work ethic, and willingness to give her all for the benefit of her team. She is dependable, positive, and consistently committed—qualities that make her a superb role model and a deserving nominee at this year’s awards

Samantha Brown – Football

We were also delighted to see Samantha Brown nominated following an outstanding year as a dedicated and courageous young footballer. Samantha has played football for around five years, moving from Red Row Raptors to Alnwick Town Juniors Girls, where she has become a key player—primarily as a goalkeeper, but equally capable when playing outfield. She was awarded Player’s Player of the Season after a league-winning year with the U11s, a testament to the respect she has earned from her peers. This season, she has been an essential part of her U12s squad, who remain unbeaten in both league and cup competitions, with Samantha’s reliability in goal proving vital to their success.
In recognition of her talent and commitment, Samantha was selected as one of only three girls to join the JCSC Football Academy, and she now represents the Northumberland County U13 team—an impressive achievement at her age. Her nomination highlights her bravery, maturity, and team-first mentality, all of which make her a standout athlete both on and off the pitch.

A Night of Recognition and Pride

Our Head of PE, Mr Swift, and Deputy Headteacher, Mrs Johnson, attended the evening to celebrate and support our pupils. Reflecting on the event, Mr Swift shared:

“We could not be prouder of Matilda and Jack. Their achievements, character, and commitment embody everything we hope to nurture in our students. Even though they did not win an award on the night, being shortlisted among such exceptional athletes is a huge honour in itself. It was a truly special evening, and we were delighted to see their sporting achievements recognised at district level. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees from across the area.”
Mr Swift, Head of PE
