Our Year 12 and 13 Chemistry students had the privilege of visiting Arcinova, a Quotient Sciences company, in Alnwick. This exciting opportunity allowed students to explore the real-world applications of analytical techniques they study as part of their A-Level Chemistry course.
Hosted by Principal Research Fellow Steve Byard, an expert with longstanding ties to James Calvert Spence College (JCSC), the visit offered students a rare glimpse into the cutting-edge world of pharmaceutical research and development. Steve, along with other specialists including a former JCSC student, guided the group through high-tech laboratories and introduced them to advanced equipment such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Infrared Spectroscopy, and Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry. These instruments are central to modern chemical analysis and drug development.
Beyond the technical demonstrations, students engaged in a careers discussion led by Steve Byard, who highlighted the growing number of opportunities in the North East’s pharmaceutical sector. This was particularly inspiring for many students considering careers in science and healthcare after their time at JCSC.
Ms Janice Bailey, Director of Science, reflecting on the experience said:
The visit was extremely insightful for our students who really valued the experience. We are incredibly grateful to Arcinova (Quotient Sciences) for their generous hospitality and for funding the transport for our students. Experiences like this are invaluable, offering students a tangible connection between their studies and the professional world. Visiting local businesses that align with our curriculum not only enhances learning but also raises aspirations for life beyond school.
