JCSC Welcomes MP David Smith for Pupil Discussion

We were delighted to welcome David Smith, Labour MP for North Northumberland, to James Calvert Spence College for an engaging and thought-provoking visit with our pupils and sixth form students. The purpose of the visit was to explore what life is like for young people growing up in Northumberland and to hear directly from them about the issues that matter most in our community.

A representative group of pupils from Year 7 through Year 13 joined the informal meeting, held in school over refreshments. Mr Smith began by sharing his own story; his experiences in state schools, his career journey, and the local issues he is passionate about. He then opened the floor to pupils, asking what interests them both inside and outside of school. This sparked lively conversations about the arts, sports, and the incredible contributions our young people make to the local community.

Year 10 pupil Will spoke passionately about his love of music and highlighted the lack of facilities in local schools to support students with similar interests. Meanwhile, sixth form student Conn shared details of his Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which investigates elitism in sport and the stark disparities in facilities between the North and South, as well as between private and state schools.

Mr Smith acknowledged these concerns, agreeing that access to arts and sports facilities is unfairly limited in some areas. He assured students that he believes every child should have equal opportunities to pursue their dreams, regardless of where they live.

Other important topics raised during the discussion included:
• Public transport: The need for more reliable bus and train services in our area.
• Free school meals: Expanding access for all pupils.
• Community recognition: Celebrating local volunteers who make a difference without government funding, relying solely on kindness and commitment.

Headteacher, Mr Andriot said: “The visit was a fantastic opportunity for our students to have their voices heard and to engage directly with a Member of Parliament about issues that affect their lives. We are proud of the thoughtful contributions made by our pupils and grateful to Mr Smith for taking the time to listen and share his insights.”
