Sophie’s Mini Saga Impresses in Young Writers Competition

Apr 16

A short story written by one of our Year 9 students is to be published in a book of mini sagas.

Sophie Jobes, 14, entered a Young Writers competition that tasked entrants to write a thriller in 100 words or less for the competition SOS Sagas: Hunted. Students were able to choose whether they wrote from the perspective of the hunted or the hunter.

There were over 2,000 entrants nationwide and as a winner, Sophie’s story will be published in the book Hunted – UK authors. A copy of the book will also remain in the National Archives of the British Library forever. Sophie will receive a copy of the book to keep as part of her prize.

“It was really quite hard sticking to the wordcount,” confessed Sophie, who was over the moon to find out her work had been selected for publishing.

Director of English at James Calvert Spence College, Kerry Payne, said: “Sophie has a real talent for writing. The language in her Hunted entry is beautiful and we are so pleased that others will get the chance to read it when her work is published. I really believe Sophie has a bright future as a professional writer. We’ll be doing everything we can at JCSC to encourage Sophie to continue pushing herself and her writing and we can’t wait to see her mini saga in print.”
