Students from the Environmental Club at James Calvert Spence School in Amble have celebrated Community Garden Week by picking up their forks, trowels and watering cans.

Members of the extracurricular club, which launched in January, have been busy planting and tending to community gardens within the school, helped by donations from Morrisons, Amble.

The club is focussed on making eco-friendly changes and improvements.

After tackling an in-school recycling challenge, club members decided to turn their attention to gardening, hoping to brighten the school grounds and create a welcoming environment for nature.

Community Garden Week runs from 4th-10th April, celebrating school and community gardens across the UK, so club attendees were pleased to receive a timely donation of plants, compost, and birdseed, arranged by Rebekka Johnson, the Community Champion at Morrisons.

Now the foundations for some fantastic flower beds are in place, the group plan to tend and maintain the garden areas during their weekly club meetings.

Teacher Jessica Chapman is one of the founders of JCSC Environmental Club.

She said: “We hope the new flowers and plants will encourage wildlife to flourish and will become features for the whole school community to enjoy. All the members of JCSC Environmental Club would like to send our thanks to Morrisons, Amble for the kind donation of plants and other items to get our school community garden project started.”
